Western Novelist. Born in Chicago, Illinois. he was an author who was the first important naturalist writer in the United States. He studied art in Paris, France, before attending the University of California at Berkeley, where he began his successful and prolific literary career. Locating to San Francisco during the days of the gold rush, he started writing articles for the Francisco Chronicle. There his short stories and novels grasp the American West during the progressive era. As a journalist and a leader of the Naturalism movement, his notable works included "McTeague" (1899), "The Octopus: A Story of California" (1901) and "The Pit" (1903). He died from an attack of appendicitis at age 32 in San Francisco, California.
