U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1801 and commenced to practice law in Albany, New York. In 1811, he was elected as a Federalist to the Twelfth Congress, serving until 1813. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was a member of the New York State Assembly, (1814-15) and a regent of the New York State University, (1822-34). In 1837, President Martin Van Buren appointed him Ambassador to the Netherlands, serving until 1842. After returning to America, he was a member of the Executive Committee for New York State colleges until his death at age 69.
