US Congressman. He graduated from Williams College Massachusetts, in 1833, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in New York City in 1837. There he was prominent in financial, political and was an executive in the railroad circles. In 1857, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fifth Congress and reelected as an Anti-Lecompton Democrat to the Thirty-sixth Congress, serving until 1861. After his final term, he became director of the New York & Harlem Railroad, was president of the Union Pacific, the Michigan Southern, a manager of the Western Union Telegraph Company and president of the Union Trust Company.
