US Congressman. He graduated from Union Theological Seminary in New York City, New York in 1863, and enlisted in the Union Army the next year, being commissioned as Chaplain of the 47th United States Colored Infantry on February 9, 1864. He served through the end of the war, and in post-War occupation duty until his honorable discharge on January 5, 1866. Residing in Alabama, he served as the Superintendent of Education for the Bureau of Refugees and Freedmen from 1866 to 1867. When Alabama was re-admitted into the Union, he was elected as a Republican to represent Alabama's 2nd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1868 to 1873. He had built up a successful banking and insurance career, and after his terms in Congress he served as a Montgomery County Probate Judge from 1874 to 1878, and was Postmaster of Montgomery, Alabama on three separate occasions. He passed away in Montgomery in 1906.
