Civil War Union Brigadier General, US Congressman, Tennessee Governor. Served as a General in the Union Army during the Civil War. Elected to represent Tennessee's 5th and 6th Districts in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1837 to 1843, and 1866 until his death in 1867. Also served as a Member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives in 1835, State Court Judge in 1847, and Governor of Tennessee from 1851 to 1853.
