Director of Flight Operations, Deutsche Zepplin Reederei. He was one of the most famous and experienced figures in German airship travel, and was aboard the Hindenburg as an observer for its first flight to the United States.

He was on the airship's bridge when it arrived in New Jersey. He survived the crash of the Hindenburg and the fire on 6 May 1937, and was transported to a nearby hospital with severe burns. He died the following afternoon.

Lehmann's wife traveled from Germany by steamship and attended the public memorial for victims of the disaster on 11 May. She accompanied his body back to Germany.

He was buried in a common grave, along with some of his fellow crew members on the Hindenburg. The marker in Frankfurt is now a cenotaph.

Several years after his burial, his widow had his body moved to
Friedhof Grassau in Grassau, Bayern, Germany, where he now lies next to his son.
