Croatian Statesman. Leader of the Croatian Peasant Party after the death of Stjepan Radic and agitator for Croatian autonomy, achieving a portion of that goal with the signing of the "Sporazum" (Understanding) of 1939. Dr. Macek was imprisoned twice for his activism, first by Yugoslavia's King Alexander in the early 1930s and then by the fascist Ustase regime during World War II. He fled to the United States when the communist takeover of Yugoslavia appeared inevitable, dying there in exile in 1964.
