US Congressman. Graduating from Princeton College in 1837, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1840. He served in Mexican War as a Major in the Regiment of Voltigeurs-Foot Riflemen and then resumed the practice of law in Philadelphia. During the Civil War, he served in the Union Army as a Colonel in command 42nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. While still in the military he declined a commission to Brigadier General, when elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-seventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of E. Joy Morris, serving (1861-63). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was editor in chief of the Philadelphia Age until his death at age 54.
