US Congressman. Born in Buffalo, New York, he attended Wesleyan College, graduated from the Albany Law School in 1857, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Buffalo, New York. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army, was commissioned an officer in the 6th Regiment, Michigan Volunteer Infantry and was discharged a Colonel in 1865. After the war, he settled in Natchez, Mississippi and was appointed register in bankruptcy in 1867. Upon readmission of the State of Mississippi to representation, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-first Congress and Forty-second Congresses, serving (1870-73). Not a candidate for reelection, he engaged in the practice of law at Chicago, Illinois, until his death at age 74.
