US Congressman. As a young man, he was a professional bicycle racer and engaged in the insurance business. He was a member of the Chicago City Council, served as commissioner of compensation for the City of Chicago, and public vehicle license commissioner for the City of Chicago, in 1934. In 1953, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Adolph J. Sabath, reelected to the Eighty-fourth and Eighty-fifth Congresses, serving until his death at age 78.
