George Thom was the son of George Thom and Margaret Begg.

He was born in Cadder, Lanark, Scotland, UK

He married Catherine Liddell on December 31, 1877 in Maryhill, Lanark, Scotland, UK.

George, his wife Catherine and their five children immigrated to the United States. They arrived in the port of New York on September 19, 1893. The came to the US on the SS Furnessia.

In the US, he was a coal miner and rose to the position of Pit Boss.

They lived in the mining camps of White County, Tennessee before moving to Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama. There George was the mining superintendent of a mining company.
