Richard Botkin was the son of Richard Botkin Sr. & Catharine ‘Caty' Campbell. He "moved from Hamilton County to Shelby County with his family in 1832." He was a "Farmer, Justice of the Peace, Land Appraiser, and Stock Dealer. The town of Botkins was named in honor of 'founder' Richard Botkin, who was one of the twelve original plat land owners." Richard Botkin married first Eliza Short, daughter of John Short & Hannah Morse, on October 22, 1829 in Hamilton County, Ohio.

They had five children:
1) Martha A. Botkin(1830-1899) m. James C. Dill
2) Erastes Botkin (Feb. 1831-Dec. 28, 1831)
3) Russell W. Botkin (1833-1868) m. Catherine Elliot
4) Robert W. Botkin (1836-1888) m. Catherine "Katie" Abbott
5) Hannah Lettisia Botkin (1838-1911) m. James David Williamson

Richard Botkin married second wife Jane Elliot (b.4 April 1824 in Licking County, Ohio; d.10 March 1891) on 14 September 1840 in Shelby County, Ohio. Jane was the daughter of Cornelius Elliot & Elizabeth Evans.

They had eight children:
1) Sarah Margaret Botkin (1842-1922) m. Daniel Cochlin
2) John Wesley Botkin (1845-1913)
3) Adam C. Botkin (1846-1847)
4) Alexander Botkin (1847-1920) m. Alpharetta Lambert
5) Eliza Botkin (1851-1851)
6) Sylvanus Botkin (1851-1899)
7) Emma J. Botkin (1853-1878) m. Samuel Fischer 'S.Fisher' Boyer (1851-1912) (*note: Two years after Emma J. Botkin's death, on the 1880 census, her 3 sons: Calvin Boyer, Age 7; Melvin Boyer, Age 7; and Stanley Boyer, Age 1, were residing in home of her mother Jane Elliott Botkin with her other siblings. A 4th son was Charles S. Boyer (1876-1925).
