The chief civilian engineer at the Springfield, Massachusetts Armory, he invented the .30 caliber semiautomatic rifle that was designated the "U.S. Rifle Caliber .30 M1" but was known as the "M1 Garand" by the United States Army in 1936. Weighing 10 pounds, it was the United States Army's main infantry weapon, and became famous for its role in the hands of American servicemen during World War II.
