Elizabeth Clark Anderson Gwathmey was one of the children born to Leut. Col. Richard Clough Anderson, Sr. and his first wife Elizabeth Clark, one of the daughter's of Jonathan "John" Clark and his wife Ann Rogers. Elizabeth was born in her parents' home known as Soldier's Retreat.

Elizabeth was united in marriage to Isaac Robertson Gwathmey on December 6, 1818 in Louisville, Kentucky. Elizabeth and Isaac were blessed with the birth of at least six children during their marriage:

Maria Louisa Gwathmey
Anne Elizabeth Gwathmey
Isaac Benjamin Gwathmey
Richard Clough Gwathmey
Mary Eliza Gwathmey

Elizabeth was left a widow when Isaac passed away at the young age of 41 years old.
