Roman Catholic Pope. Pedro Juliao received his masters degree around 1240 from the University of Paris. Moving to the University of Sienna as professor of medicine in 1247, he published his "Summulae logicalness." One of his most important medical books was "Liber de oculo." He served as archdeacon and became the physician of Pope Gregory who named him Cardinal in 1273. Three years later, Gregory died, followed by the very short reigns of Innocent V (153 days) and Adrian V (38 days). Pedro was named the 187th pope in September of 1276. During his reign, he worked towards a better relationship between Rome and the Eastern Church. He worked to keep Charles of Anjou in check given that he desired to extend his political power past his kingdom of Sicily. He also dealt with the kings of Portugal, England, France and Navarre over a variety of religious and secular issues. Pope John XXI died from injuries seven days after the ceiling of his private study collapsed.
