Roman Catholic Pope. He was born Poppo de Curagnoni, the younger son of a Bavarian noble family. By 1040, he was the Bishop of Brixen in now Austria. He traveled with Henry III of Germany to Rome. By the time they arrived in Rome, there were three popes. After a synod, all three were dismissed and Henry was named as patricius, which allowed him to nominate another pope. Finally Clement II was chosen and Henry was crowned as Emperor with Poppo witnessing these events. When Clement died in 1047, another papal ascension controversy erupted. Several nominees were proposed and after a year of infighting, Poppo, now Damasus II was elected as pope on July 17, 1048. He died 23 days later.
