Death: Nov. 18, 1893
Decatur
Otsego County
New York, USA

Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Ireland on December 21, 1841, during the Civil War he served as a Private in Company H, 148th New York Infantry, Union Army. In an engagement with Confederate forces at Hatcher's Run, Virginia, on April 2, 1865, Private Mangam captured the flag of the Confederate 8th Mississippi Infantry. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on September 21, 1888. He died at age 51 of cardiac disease. On his original grave marker, his last name is misspelled as Mangan. In May 2008, Donald Morfe from the Medal of Honor Historical Society Baltimore, had a brass government marker inscribed with Mangam's correct name and the Medal of Honor and installed in a special recognition ceremony at his burial site. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
