Pope. Elected to pope on January 5 in 269, he succeeded Dionysius. Shortly after his election he was requested to confirm the divinity of the Trinity after a local bishop in Samosata, was accused of heresy on this topic. He is also credited with building a basilica on the Via Aurelia. Felix was erroneously credited with the tradition of celebrating the Mass on the tombs of martyrs. It is possible this grew out of the practice of commemorating the martyrs anniversary at the basilicas built in Rome some of which were built over catacombs. This evolved into the Catholic tradition of incorporating a martyr's bones into Catholic altars. There is no evidence he died a martyr. Later research by the Roman Catholic Church removed his feast day in 1954.
