Hugo Sheridan Ackerman, 91, of 1000 Live Oak Drive, Orangeburg, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at The Methodist Oaks. The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 12, at Sunnyside Cemetery, with the Rev. Kermitt Shrawder officiating. Mr. Ackerman was born in Cottageville, a son of the late James Daniel Ackerman and Cora Sheridan Ackerman. He was a 1932 graduate of Wofford College and received his master's degree at Duke University. He taught mostly American history and civilization at Orangeburg High School. Following his retirement, he worked many years building the archives of the Orangeburg Historical Society. He was a member of the Country Club of Orangeburg the Orangeburg Historical Society and the Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Ackerman was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Pacific Theatre in the Philippines. Mr. Ackerman was the widower of Helen Till Ackerman. Survivors include his brother, David Ackerman of Walnut Creek; two nieces; two nephews. Memorials may be made to Orangeburg Historical Society,P.O. Box 1881, Orangeburg, SC 29116.
