Roman Catholic Pope and Saint. Eusebius' reign as Pope was short lived as he became pope on April 18, 309 and ended his reign on August 17, 309. He had been banished by Emperor Maxentius for the same reason his predecessor Pope Marcellus I was exiled. The continued discord in Rome between the papacy and the "Lapsi's, (those who wished to come back to the church, but refused to do penance) and the Emperor's apparent debt to them which caused the banishment and subsequent death of Eusebius in Sicily. Because he defended the tradition of discipline that he had inherited in the papacy, and because of his banishment he was considered both a saint and a martyr.
