World War I British Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. During the First World War, he served as a Lance-Sergeant in the 1st Battalion, Rifle Brigade British Army. On April 22, 1918, at La Pannerie France, he was in charge of a squad which was held down during an advance by a German machine gun. On his own initiative he rushed forward single-handedly captured the gun and eight men. He then collected ten of his men, rushed a farm house under heavy fire and captured thirty prisoners. Shortly afterwards when the officer in charge was killed, he took command of the entire platoon and skillfully organized the men while sending back invaluable information to the rear command. For most conspicuous bravery and leadership, he was awarded the British Victoria Cross, in June 1918. After the war, Woodall stayed in the Army and retired a Captain in September 1921.
