Actress. She was an American stage actress of the 20th century along with being active for many years with the Actors Studio, which is, according to the facility's documentation, a membership organization for professional actors, theatre directors and playwrights founded in New York by Elia Kazan, Cheryl Crawford and Robert Lewis in 1947. Her husband Lee Strasberg, an acting teacher at Actors Studio, became the manager from 1951 until his death. She was Marilyn Monroe's coach and off-screen advisor. She was Monroe's dialogue coach in three films: "The Prince and the Showgirl" in 1957, "Some Like It Hot" in 1959, and "The Misfits" in 1961 and for this job, she was paid up to $5,000 a week. Born Pearl Miller into a Jewish household, she made her Broadway debut at age 16 in 1927, appearing in "The Cradle Song." She appeared in 20 stage roles until "Me and Molly." in 1948. During the years of McCarthyism, she was blacklisted as she was a member of the Communist Party. She appeared on the television show "Arlene Francis" in 1957 and "ABC Stage 67." In 1929 she married Harry Stein and by 1935 was divorced. She was the second wife of Lee Strasberg and the couple had two children, John and Susan Strasberg, who both became actors. She died from the complications of bone cancer.
