Basuto War Victoria Cross Recipient. He received the award as a surgeon major in the Cape Mounted Riflemen, Cape Colonial Forces on June 5, 1879 in South Africa during the Basuto Gun War. The oldest son of a medical doctor, he also served in the Anglo-Zulu War (January to July 1879) and the Second Boer War (1899 to 1902), achieving the rank of colonel. His Victoria Cross citation reads: "On 5 June 1879 in South Africa, Surgeon Major Hartley attended the wounded under fire at the unsuccessful attack at Morosi's Mountain. From an exposed position, on open ground, he carried in his arms a wounded corporal of the Cape Mounted Riflemen. The surgeon major then returned under severe enemy fire in order to dress the wounds of the other men of the storming party." In addition to the Victoria Cross, he also received the Order of St. Michael and St. George, the Queen's South African Medal (with three campaign clasps), the King's South African Medal (with two campaign clasps), among others. He died at the age of 71. His Victoria Cross and other medals are on display at the Army Medical Services Museum in Mytchett, Surrey, England.
