World War II Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the South Saskatchewan Regiment, Canadian Forces. At Dieppe, France, on August 19, 1942, Lieutenant Colonel Merritt led his unit's advance across a bridge in Pourville which was swept by heavy German machine-gun. The first parties were mostly destroyed when he rushed a enemy position and destroyed the occupants of the post by throwing grenades into it. Although twice wounded he continued to direct the unit's operations while organizing the withdrawal. He then gave orders for the departure and held a defensive position which successfully covered the withdrawal of his men. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal in October 1942.
