SPRINGVALE ADVOCATE - 12 December 1913:
*************************************
Mrs. Alice M. Carter committed suicide by hanging on Thursday morning of last week while suffering from temporary mental aberration. She was the wife of Judson F. Carter of the Deering neighborhood.
She had been in poor health for some time.
When Mr. Carter and his son, Dennis, were about to go outdoors, Dennis remarked that he would go upstairs first and see how his mother was. On ascending the stairs he saw her in an open chamber which he occupied as a bedroom, apparently looking out the window. Asking her how she was and receiving no reply, he went nearer to her and discovered that she was hanging from a beam by a rope made of shoe lacings. Cutting the cord, he called to his father. It was apparent that she had been dead for some time and it was thought probable that she had hanged herself immediately after Mr. Carter had left her an hour before.
On Wednesday evening, Mr. Carter noticed that she had a number of shoe lacings in a closet, tied together in the form of a rope, but never gave them a thought until he found the next morning why she made them.
Inside her waist were five notes she had written to her husband during the previous three days, telling what she was going to do, and where she wished to be buried, and asking forgiveness of her husband and family for the way in which she was about to leave them.
The great profusion of floral tributes bore silent witness to the esteem in which she was held by those who knew her best.
