James Murray
Birth: Feb., 1859
Death: Jul. 19, 1942

First Boer War Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Lance Corporal, 3rd Battalion, Connaught Rangers. On January 16, 1881, in an attack on the Boers at Elandsfontein, South Africa, Lance Corporal Murray noticed a soldier of the 21st Foot who had been severely wounded. In advancing for 500 yards under a very heavy fire from a party of about 60 Boers, he retrieved the wounded man and returned to safety with himself being severely wounded. For gallant conduct, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal by Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle on May 15, 1882. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
