Rev. Douglas Hubert Garwood was the son of Joseph T. and Mildred Anna (Pullen) Garwood. He was the husband of Janet (Hauck) Garwood. They were married August 24, 1946. Janet died January 28, 1991. Rev. Garwood was a minister in the Genesee (Western New York/now Upper New York) Conference of The Methodist Church/United Methodist Church. He served in the US Army during World War II and the Vietnam War.

GARWOOD.--Douglas H., age 84, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL., died Feb. 4, 2006. He was born Oct. 26, 1921 in Lakeland, Fl., the son of Joseph and Mildred (Pullen) Garwood. He attended more than 16 schools in New Jersey and Florida. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the European Theater, and it was during this time that he received his call to ministry. In 1946 he married Janet Hauck while they were attending college in Hanover, IN. She preceded him in death in 1991, after 44 years of devotion to each other. He attended Colgate Rochester Divinity School and was ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church in 1954. In 1956 he became a U.S. Army Chaplain, serving in Germany, Korea and Vietnam as well as various assignments in the United States, retiring in 1973. He returned to civilian ministry in the Western New York Conference of the United Methodist Church, retiring in 1982. He was admired for his generosity and strong convictions, believing in the dignity of all people. He will be remembered for his readiness with tools, always being involved with his own or assisting with someone elses building project. He was a skilled tennis player, winning many awards and trophies over the years, most recently playing in the South Florida Senior Games. He also loved sailing, traveling, music, anbd spending summers with his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Seth Garwood, and a grandson, Justin Conklin, both during 2005; a sister Eileen Fuss, and brothers, Edwin and Ralph. He is survived by a son, PHILIP (Pam Mitchell) GARWOOD of Gardiner, ME; a daughter, SUSAN (Hugh CONKLIN) GARWOOD of Boyne City, MI; a daughter-in-law, Rebecca Garwood of Gardiner, ME, and Evan and Philip Conklin of Boyne City, MI; a daughter-in-law, Rebecca Hanson of Minneapolis, MN; and a brother, Robert (Terry) Garwood of Manlius, NY. Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 10 at Kraeer Funeral Home, 4061 N. Federal Hwy. from 6-8 p.m. Funeral will be Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. at Christ Church United Methodist in Ft. Lauderdale. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Committee on Relief.
