US Congressman. Charles Francis Xavier O'Brien was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. After graduating from Fordham University and the New York Law School, O'Brien became a lawyer in Jersey City. He became a judge and than the Public Safety Director of Jersey City. A Democrat, O'Brien was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1920. He served in the 67th Congress. O'Brien earned the nickname, "The Golden Voiced Orator". He was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1920. In 1922, O'Brien was re-elected to the 58th Congress. After he completed his second term, he chose not to run for re-election and instead became Registrar of Records of Hudson County. He moved to the Jersey City law department were he worked until his death. His grave in Holy Name Cemetery does not bear his name, but only the name 'Hughes'. Cemetery records show that he is in fact interred there.
