Donald and his best friend enlisted in the Marines 12 June 1968, at a recruiting office in Seattle, Washington.
He took his boot camp training at the MCRD in San Diego graduating with Platoon 3041 18 September 1968 (Washington State Platoon 1968). Upon arriving in Vietnam 8 January 1969, Donald was assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. The battalion was participating in Operation Linn River in the vicinity of Nui Dat Son (Hill 55) and 14 kilometers couth of Danang, when Donald died as a result of a gunshot wound to the body from friendly fire.
Survived by his mother, Mary Anita Heider and his younger brother, Russell Guy Heider of 2521 Northeast, 38th Avenue, Portland, Oregon.

His father, Raymond Heider was deceased.
