U.S. Senator, U.S. Congressman. Born the son of Richard Stockton a signer of the Declaration of Independence, he graduated from the College of New Jersey in 1779, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1784 and commenced practice law in Princeton, New Jersey. In 1789, he was elected the first U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, serving until 1791. In 1796, he was elected as a Federalist to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Frederick Frelinghuysen, serving until 1799. Declining to be a candidate for reelection, he was elected as a Federalist to the Thirteenth Congress, serving (1813-15). Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
