Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. He was gazetted for the award on June 19, 1860, for his actions as a corporal with the British Corps of Royan Engineers on April 3, 1858, at Jhansi, British India. He joined the British military forces in the 1840's as a means of gaining employment during the Irish potato famine. He originally enlisted in the royal artillery, but being a skilled mason, his expertise was required in the engineers. During his military career, he served in Bermuda, Mauritius, and India, eventually being promoted to the rank of corporal. In 1871 he retired from military service and returned to Ireland where he lived on a farm. His Victoria Cross citation reads: "For determined bravery at the attack of the Fort of Jhansi, on the 3rd of April, 1858, in maintaining his position at the head of a sap, and continuing the work under a heavy fire, with a cool and steady determination worthy of the highest praise."
