Musician, Composer and Conductor. He earned much international acclaim for his music, which combined elements of the East and West. His opera "The Crane at Sunset," has been staged over 650 times in Japan and other countries. He enjoyed particular popularity in China. His other works included "The Great Wall," "The Silk Road," and "Flying Apsaras." He was also writer of prose and was serving as the president of the Japan-China Cultural Exchange Association at the time of his death due to a heart attack during a visit to China.
