US Congressman. He engaged in the cooper's trade, when he graduated from the law department of the University of Michigan, in 1869, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in South Bend, Indiana. He was prosecuting attorney of St. Joseph County, (1873, 75-84). In 1885, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-ninth Congress, serving until 1887. Declining to be a candidate for reelection, he was head of the legal department of an implement concern, judge of the superior court of St. Joseph County, in 1914 and practiced law until his death at age 71.
