George Kirkpatrick Denton
Birth: Nov. 17, 1864
Death: Jan. 4, 1926

US Congressman. Elected as a Democrat to represent Indiana's 1st District in the Sixty-fifth Congress, he served from 1917 to 1919. Born near Sebree, Kentucky, he graduated from the law department of Boston University in 1893, was admitted to the bar that year, and settled in Evansville, Indiana. He pursued corporate law as counsel to a major insurance company. Denton's single term in Congress marked his only time in the national political spotlight. He was defeated for reelection in 1918, and was an unsuccessful candidate for Indiana Supreme Court Justice in 1924. In late 1925 he began seeking the Democratic nomination for the 1926 US Senate race, but died in Evansville before the primary election. He was the father of US Congressman Winfield K. Denton. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
