U.S. Congressman. Born in Pickensville, South Carolina, he graduated from South Carolina College in 1814, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1819 and began a law practice in Edgefield, South Carolina. He was a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives, (1826-29), solicitor of the western circuit in 1830 and a Brigadier General in the South Carolina Militia in 1832. In 1885, he was elected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Warren R. Davis, reelected as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth and Twenty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1841. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was appointed Envoy Extraordinary and US Minister Plenipotentiary to Mexico, serving (1842-44). After leaving as US Minister, he moved to Florida, engaged in planting cotton, was appointed by the Florida Legislature a solicitor general of a circuit in 1868 and served until his death at age 70.
