US Congressman. Moving with his family to Ohio, he taught school while attending Wesleyan University, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1857, then relocated to Goshen, Indiana and practiced law. He was a member of the Indiana State Senate in 1862 and was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fourth, Forty-fifth and Forty-sixth Congresses, serving from 1875 t0 1881. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law and was appointed by President Benjamin Harrison as Judge of the United States District Court for Indiana, serving in that office from 1892 to 1904.
