U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Brown University Rhode Island, in 1797, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1801 and commenced to practice law in Windsor, Vermont. He was prosecuting attorney for Windsor County, (1813-18) and a member of the Vermont State House of Representatives, (1819-20, 22, 24, 34). In 1829, he was elected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-first through the Twenty-fourth Congresses and reelected as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth, Twenty-sixth and Twenty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1843. After his final term, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 71.
