North Carolina Governor, U.S. Senator. He graduated from the University of North Carolina, in 1939 and was a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (1941-42). During World War II, he served as First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry, in Europe (1942-45). After the war, he graduated from University of North Carolina Law School 1946, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Durham, North Carolina. He was the assistant director, of the University of North Carolina (1946-48) and a member of the North Carolina State Senate (1953-55). In 1961, he was elected as a Democrat the 65th Governor of North Carolina, serving until 1965. During his terms, an anti-poverty program was created, the elimination of discrimination practices was promoted and numerous improvements were made to the state’s educational system. After leaving office, he returned to his legal practice, was president of Duke University (1969-85) and was elected to the U.S. Senate, serving 1986-93. Retiring from politics, he resumed the practice of law until his death from cancer.
