Organized Crime Figure. He was the leader of Detroit, Michigan's West Side mob during Prohibition. A survivor of the Giannola-Vitale gang war of 1919 to 1921 and controller of most of Hamtramck, Michigan's rackets, when mob boss Sam Catalanotte died in February 1930, LaMare attempted to seize control of the city's criminal enterprises, resulting in a violent gang war between him and the East Side mob under Joe Zerilli. The war concluded in February 1931 when LaMare was shot to death in the kitchen of his home by two of his own men.
