US Congressman. A lawyer and member of the Massachusetts State Bar since 1860, during the Civil War he enlisted in the Union Army, and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant of Company B, 4th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry on August 28, 1862. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on September 8, 1862, he served until honorably mustered out on August 28, 1863. After serving in the Massachusetts State Legislature and in the Massachusetts State Senate, and after a term as Mayor of Lawrence, Massachusetts, he was elected as a Democrat to represent Massachusetts' 7th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. He served a single term from 1875 to 1877, and lost his bid for re-election to former Union Army Major General Benjamin Franklin Butler. He returned to his hometown of Lawrence, and served as City Solicitor. He passed away in Boston, Massachusetts in 1887.
