Monegasque sovereign prince. Born Louis Honoré Charles Antoine Grimaldi de Monaco, he was the only son and heir of Prince Albert I. He dedicated the early stages of his life to his military career (1892) by attending the Academy of Saint-Cyr and then serving in the French army, with which he also participated in the First World War, during which he distinguished himself for his heroism and for which he was decorated with the Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur and promoted to the rank of Brigadier General (1917-1918). Upon the death of his father (1922), he ascended the throne of the Principality with the name of Louis II. The first 15 years of his rule were marked by an internal policy with poor reforms and a foreign policy apparently in solidarity with the Italian-German dictatorial regimes, which compromised his credibility with the Allies during the Second World War. He redeemed himself by warning the United States in advance of the planned deportations of Jews arranged by the Vichy government. He was succeeded by his grandson, Rainier III, the son of his daughter Charlotte Duchess of Valentinois.
