Monegasque Nobility. Fourth-born son of Lamberto Grimaldi, after a series of events that saw the elder brother Giovanni and the younger brother Luciano as Lords of the Principality, assumed the regency of the Principality (1523) leaving out his ecclesiastical positions. His appointment as Lord was deemed necessary to avoid a complete enslavement to the France and therefore his way of governing was very balanced and prudent. Prince Augustine was initiated into clerical career at a young age. He was elevated to the rank of Bishop by Pope Alexander VI (1498) and was head of the diocese of Majorca as well as Archbishop of Oristano.
