Monegasque Nobility. He was the last son of Luciano Grimaldi, known for having occupied the Lordship of Monaco by assassinating his brother Giovanni II, in turn assassinated by his nephew Bartolomeo Doria. He ascended at a very young age to the rank of Lord of the Principality under the tutelage and regency of his uncle Agostino, former archbishop of Oristano, and from 1532 until 1540 of Nicola and Stefano Grimaldi. During his forty-year reign the political climate of Monaco was quite peaceful thanks privileged relations with Spain.
