Monegasque Sovereign. First-born son of Honorè IV Grimaldi and Crown Prince of the Principality. In 1798, he embarked on a military career serving in the French army distinguishing himself for heroism during some of the most significant battles of the Napoleonic wars, including Jena (1806) who earned him the Legion of Honor. With the fall of Bonaparte, he found himself in a vacillating situation following the ongoing peace treaties which provided for a probable annexation of Monaco to the Kingdom of Sardinia. However, after the Congress of Vienna and following the Treaty of Paris (1814), the Principality maintained its autonomy. In 1815, Honorè V was appointed regent after the temporary assignment given to his uncle Giuseppe given the impossibility of Honorè IV to reside in Monaco. He ascended the throne after the death of his father (1819) and the years that followed were, according to historians, full of economic difficulties and wrong choices of domestic and foreign policy also due to the interference of Vittorio Emanuele I of Savoy. Honorè V died without direct heirs and his only successor was his younger brother Florestan.
