FAMED COLLECTOR OF PAINTINGS SUCCUMBS
William E. Ransom Answers Last Summons Following Years of Illness
William E. Ransom, internationally famous as a collector and distributor of fine paintings, died at his home in this city, 1722 Fourth avenue, late Friday night, following an operation necessitated by an illness from which he has suffered periodically for four years. He rallied almost immediately from the anesthetic, but suddenly relapsed into unconsciousness and remained in that state until death came.
With Mr. Ransom were his sons, Adrian C. and Don E. Ransom. The artist had been a widower for several years.
Shortly after the announcement of the death many appeals were made to the family that steps be taken to perpetuate the several galleries which Mr. Ransom operated during his twenty-year residence here, and to thus preserve for this city what is declared to be one of the finest collections of original oil paintings now in this country. It was stated that the sons will perpetuate the exhibits.
Some of Mr. Ransom's most notable importations are now in such famous American collections as those of Henry E. Huntington, Yerkes, Havermeyer, Widener and other exhibits.
Mr. Ransom was born at Rochester, N.Y., in 1856 and spent the earlier part of his life at Cleveland, O. In 1888 he removed to New York and established what later became a celebrated gallery on the present site of the Flatiron Building.
Yearly he would journey to Europe and gather the works of the finest masters and in this manner he became intimately associated with such noted artists as Tambourina, once court painter to the King of Italy; Verschargen, famous Russian painter killed in the battle of Port Arthur; Robert Hillingsford, leading English artist, and many others, some of whom are dead.
One of his greatest friends in Europe is Count Victoria Guaccimani who is dramatically endeavoring, on an order from Mr. Ransom, to complete a masterpiece before blindness overtakes him.
