Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. When the was began he was mustered in as a Private in Company F, 7th New York Militia on April 26, 1861, and served until mustered out on June 3, 1861. On November 19, 1862 he was commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel of the 175th New York Volunteer Infantry. Promoted Colonel and commander on June 14, 1863, he served through the end of the war, and was honorably mustered out on August 5, 1865. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on September 28, 1865 for "meritorious services".
