Actor. He was a prominent figure in British theatre. Born in England, his parents were French. He toured around Europe with other actors. He did study to be a sculptor. Late in 1844, he was awarded the grand medal of the Académie des Beaux-Arts with a piece of sculpture and made his debut at the Comédie-Française as Seide in Voltaire's Mahomet and Valère in Molière's Tartuffe. After being a successful stage actor in England, he immigrated in 1870 to the United States. Later in life, he managed the Globe Theatre in New York City and had several failed attempts to lease theaters. He was not as successful as he was in England. A bust of the actor by himself is in the Garrick Club, London. Over the last two decades, the cemetery has declined greatly by 2021.
