US Congressman, US Senator. He graduated from Hillsdale College in 1870, studied law, admitted to the bar in 1871 and commenced to practice law in Aurora, Illinois. He was prosecuting attorney of Kane County, (1872-76) and presidential elector on the Republican ticket in 1884. In 1885, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-ninth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Reuben Ellwood, reelected to the Fiftieth Congress and to the next seven succeeding Congresses, serving until 1903. After leaving Congress, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving (1903-09). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
