Haitian Campaign Medal of Honor Recipient. He was issued the award on October 30, 1916 for his actions as a corporal with the 13th Company, Artillery Battalion, 1st Brigade, US Marine Corps on July 3, 1916, near Guayacanas, Dominican Republic. He joined the US Marine Corps in December 1913 and the following year he saw action in the US occupation of Vera Cruz, Mexico. In 1915 he participated in the US occupation of Haiti, followed by the Dominican Republic in 1916. On that day, his small detachment of Marines encountered a strong row of bandit trenches manned by a superior force. The Marines were exposed, and their only course lay in a direct frontal attack. Although wonded by enemy fire, he remained at his post, fighting off the enemy until wounded again and forced by his comrades to get medical aid. He remained in the Dominican Republic until June 1917 where he was temporarily promoted to the rank of gunnery sergeant, and was honorably discharged six months later. He then returned to his native Detroit, Michigan, where he served on the city's police force from 1923 until 1941. He died at the age of 60. His Medal of Honor citation reads: "During an engagement at Guayacanas on 3 July 1916, Cpl. Glowin participated in action against a considerable force of rebels on the line of march."
