Spanish-American War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the United States Navy during the War with Spain as a Boatswain's Mate Second Class on board the "USS Marblehead". He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery during the cutting of the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, on May 11, 1898. His citation reads "Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Doran set an example of extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this action." His Medal was awarded to him on July 7, 1899. His nephew, United States Army Chaplain Major Charles Watters, received a posthumous Medal of Honor for his bravery during the Viet Nam War.
